As part of our mission to strengthen the capacity of African human rights and political institutions, IHRDA in partnership with the Initiative for Strategic Litigation in Africa (ISLA), Robert Kennedy Human Rights (RFK), Synergia Initiative for Human Rights, Centre for Human Rights (CHR) and African Renaissance co-convened a civil society strategy consultation meeting on African Union reforms in Nairobi in August 2025. This consultation meeting aimed to raise awareness among civil society organisations that engage with the African Union’s human rights mechanisms on some of the proposals of the African Union towards reforming the human rights organs including proposed potential merger of the African Commission and ACERWC and how these will impact human rights protection and accountability on the continent. An integral part of the meeting was the development of a civil society position on the proposed reforms to ensure that we have a united front to engage with the reforms unit of the African Union with our concerns about the proposals.
