Case Law Databases

African Human Rights Case Law Analyser (CLA)

The Case Law Analyser (CLA) is an innovative, free-to-access online database developed by IHRDA to serve as the most comprehensive resource for African human rights jurisprudence. As a unique one-stop joint for the African human rights system, it aggregates, translates, and publishes hundreds of decisions from six key supra-national bodies— the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACtHPR), African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC), the ECOWAS Court of Justice, the East African Court of Justice (EACJ), and the now defunct SADC Tribunal—in English, French, Portuguese, and Arabic. Moving beyond a simple list of instruments, the CLA presents decisions as interacting, hyperlinked texts that connect to international systems like the UN and European human rights frameworks. By utilizing metadata, preliminary headnotes, and a specialized reading pane that allows for the simultaneous consultation of cited documents, the platform provides an unparalleled, research-friendly environment for understanding the complex web of African human rights law.

It was developed with technical support from Human Rights Information and Documentation Systems (HURIDOCS).

The Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) Database

The Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) Database is a specialized, free-to-access legal resource designed to support lawyers, human rights defenders, and researchers by providing a centralized platform for accessing SGBV-related legislation and jurisprudence. Launched in March 2015 as an extension of IHRDA’s digital tools, the platform aggregates national legislation and decisions from superior domestic courts specifically pertaining to Sexual and Gender-Based Violence. It serves as a vital tool for those litigating SGBV cases, allowing them to navigate the domestic legal frameworks of various African countries—including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Mali, The Gambia, Sudan, and Burkina Faso—with content available in English, French, and Arabic.

Designed for high usability, the database features primary case law from domestic jurisdictions enriched with metadata and preliminary headnotes, allowing users to easily find relevant legal information. The platform utilizes advanced search filters—such as country, decision type, and specialized keywords—and offers an interactive reading experience where users can simultaneously consult cited national and international instruments through hyperlinked text. By providing free access to these legal resources, the SGBV Database equips advocates with the information necessary to secure remedies for survivors and effectively challenge sexual violations within their own national judicial systems.

It was developed with the technical support from HURIDOCS.
