Summary:
In several communities in Northern Ghana, individuals—primarily women—accused of witchcraft are subjected to ostracism, violence, and forced exile from their homes. Many seek refuge in so-called “witch camps,” where they live in precarious conditions without adequate protection or access to basic services.
The case argues that the State has failed to take adequate legislative and other measures to prevent witchcraft accusations, protect victims from violence and discrimination, and prosecute perpetrators, thereby violating rights to dignity, equality and non-discrimination under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
