In August 2025, IHRDA and the Centre de Documentation et de Formation sur les droits de l’Homme (CDFDH), in partnership with REDRESS hosted a workshop in Lomé for Togolese lawyers and civil society organisations on national and regional strategic litigation of torture related cases. The repression of civic space in Togo continues unabated with state officials often targeting civil society actors and using excessive force, including torture and inhuman treatment against protesters and those who express dissent against the Togolese regime. With this background in mind the workshop aimed to a)assess the human rights context in Togo, with a focus on the use of torture against protesters; b) strengthen the capacity of lawyers, civil society organizations and victims in strategic litigation on torture, particularly in the context of protests; c) provide participants with practical knowledge and skills in strategic litigation, including the identification, documentation and litigation of torture cases; d)facilitate the sharing of experiences and good practices among lawyers, civil society organizations members, victims of torture, and human rights defenders in the Togo pool of human rights defenders that was set up with the support of IHRDA in a previous project; e) develop a concrete litigation plan for specific cases of torture for protesters arrested and detained in different cells in Togo; and f) strengthen collaboration, networking and solidarity among lawyers, civil society organizations and victims of torture.
