Orquídea Massarongo-Jona

Orquídea Massarongo-Jona is a Company Lawyer and a Lecturer at the Faculty of Law at Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (UEM) in Mozambique. She serves as the Program Director at Centre for Human Rights (CDH), Human Rights Master’s Program. She is currently a member of the Advisory Board of the Human Rights Centre at the University of Pretoria (2023-2027). She is also a member of the Council of Directors of the African Universities Network of the Human Rights and Democratisation Programme in Africa in partnership with the University of Pretoria (South Africa) and a member of the Board of Directors of the Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa (IHRDA) since January 2021.

Outside Africa, she is a member of ALDIS (Lusophone Association of Health Law), based in Coimbra (Portugal). She has been collaborating as a lecturer since 2016 with Ius Gentium Conimbrigae (IGC) – Human Rights Centre, University of Coimbra, in the Postgraduate Programme in Human Rights, and from 2021 with POSCOHR (Portuguese Speaking Countries Observatory of Human Rights), in the Postgraduate Programme in Human Rights, Health and Justice.

Mrs. Massarongo-Jona served as the Vice-President of the Mozambican Bar Association from 2016 to 2023, and she has been a member of the National Research Ethics Committee since 2005.

Mrs. Massarongo-Jona is currently pursuing a PhD at University of São Paulo (USP) in the field of Human Rights and Social Inclusion. She graduated from UEM in 2002 and obtained an LL.M. in International Trade Law from the University of Stellenbosch in 2003. She has research interests on the Human Rights African System, Gender and Women’s Rights, Business and human rights, with a recent focus on oil and gas law.
