Training and Capacity Building

Regional capacity building and case identification workshop on child rights and business

While businesses remain important agents for economic development in Africa, unmitigated harmful business practices have severe negative impacts on the rights of vulnerable groups with children often the most impacted. This workshop therefore sought to raise awareness among civil society organisations in Anglophone Africa on the harmful impacts of business activities on children and to galvanize action towards holding businesses accountable for child rights violations as well as ensuring that states are complying with their obligations to protect vulnerable communities and individuals from harmful business conduct. This workshop brought together participants from 10 African countries to share experiences and strategies they have used in their respective countries, to understand how they can more effectively engage in documentation of violations and using national, regional, international and development finance accountability mechanisms to protect children’s rights and seek redress for violations. The workshop also provided a platform for participants to share harmful business practices within their national contexts which could benefit from the intervention of some of the accountability mechanisms discussed during the workshop.
