Capacity-Building on Torture Prevention and Human Rights Standards for Prison Officers in The Gambia

On 24 June, our Legal Officer, Louisa Ntaji, represented IHRDA in facilitating a capacity-building workshop with officers from the Gambia Prison Service on the Prevention and Prohibition of Torture Act, 2023, as well as the legal and human rights standards governing the treatment of prisoners and detainees.

Organised by the National Human Rights Commission, Gambia (NHRC) , the workshop examined the various forms of torture and ill-treatment prohibited under Gambian and international law, including physical violence, denial of medical care, restrictions on access to legal representation, interference with family visits, and other practices that undermine human dignity.
