Banjul, 15 May 2017: The women’s rights case of Association pour le Progrès et la Défense des Droits des Femmes (APDF) and معهد حقوق الإنسان والتنمية في أفريقيا (IHRDA) v Republic of Mali (Communication 046/2016) at the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (AfCHPR) will be heard tomorrow (16 May 2017) in Arusha, Tanzania.

APDF and IHRDA had filed this case in July 2016, challenging certain provisions of the Malian Code of Persons and the Family which are inconsistent with the standards of the Protocol to the African Charter on the Rights of Women in Africa (the Maputo Protocol), ratified by Mali on 13 January 2005. APDF & IHRDA thus allege that Government of Mali is in violation of Malian women’s rights guaranteed under the Maputo Protocol.
