IHRDA, in collaboration with Trial International, is organizing a 2-day training workshop for staff and members of the Gambia Centre for Victims of Human Rights Violations Victims (the Victims’ Centre) on international standards for combatting impunity for enforced disappearance (ED) and extra-judicial killings (EJK) in The Gambia.
The workshop runs from 30 September to 1 October 2019 in Banjul, The Gambia.
Topics covered include legal frameworks on ED/EJK; seeking state and individual accountability for ED/EJK; documenting universal jurisdiction cases; mapping and documenting cases of ED/EJK in The Gambia; advocacy for justice and accountability to right against ED/EJK in The Gambia; and advocacy for Justice and Accountability to fight against ED/EJK in The Gambia. The training draws on international standards pertaining to human rights law and international humanitarian law.
The workshop falls within the framework of efforts to ensure access to justice and remedy for victims of human rights violations perpetrated especially by agents of the Yahya Jammeh regime during his 22 years as President of The Gambia. The workshop is one in a series of activities planned for the Gambia in a 2-year project jointly implemented in The Gambia, Mexico and Nepal by IHRDA, Trial International, Swisspeace, the Human Rights and Justice Centre, and Fundación para la Justicia y Estado Democratico de Derecho (FJEDD), focusing on ED and EJK.
The project is funded by the European Union.
