Gambia Advocacy Training on Freedom of Expression (Call for Applications)

The Media Legal Defence Initiative (MLDI), the Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa (IHRDA), and the Open Society Justice Initiative (OSJI) are calling for applications from human rights defenders, journalists, activists and campaigners based in The Gambia to participate in a forthcoming advocacy training surgery on implementing freedom of expression judgments of the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice.

The day-long advocacy surgery will be held in Banjul on 13 November 2017. The purpose of the training is to equip the participants with the necessary skills and knowledge regarding the international human rights standards and mechanisms, and existing judgments on freedom of expression from the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice, to enable them to carry out advocacy and campaigning on implementation.

Twenty participants will be selected to attend the training on the basis of the following criteria:

  • Applicants must be human rights defenders, journalists, activists and/or campaigners based in The Gambia with at least one year involvement in human rights or journalism;
  • Applicants must have a demonstrated interest/experience in advocacy/journalism work around media freedom or freedom of expression in The Gambia;
  • Applicants must have a demonstrated interest/experience in engaging with international and regional human rights mechanisms in their advocacy/journalistic work;
  • Applicants may be members of and/or employed with an NGO or journalism union (desirable);
  • Applicants should demonstrate knowledge of and/or experience with the ECOWAS human rights system (desirable).

The working language for the surgery will be English.
