Arusha, 23/24 October 2023: IHRDA partners in Togo, Benin, Cote d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso enjoin the ACHPR to take action regarding human rights violations in their respective countries.
In joint statement by CDFDH and Repère et Développement Durable (RDD-ONG), on behalf of Togo and Benin pools of human rights defenders (HRDs), respectively, at the 77th Ordinary Session of ACHPR in Arusha, Tanzania, the partners decried extensive human rights violations perpetrated by industries in the Togo free-trade zones against workers and riverine communities, high rate of arbitrary arrest/detention and widespread restriction of civil liberties in Togo, as well as rampant extra-judicial killing of suspected terrorists, non-protection of the right to education in conflict zones, among other issues in Benin.
On their part, GRASH and AFJ-CI, on behalf Burkina Faso and Cote d’Ivoire pools of HRDs, respectively, jointly spoke to the problem of widespread violation of women and girls’ rights in their countries.
The participation of these partners in the ACHPR session is within the framework of IHRDA’s efforts to support and facilitate the engagement of domestic HRDs with the African human rights system. See full statements below:
