Banjul, 5 September 2024 – Michael Gyan Nyarko has joined the Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa (IHRDA) as Deputy Executive Director.
Michael holds postgraduate degrees from the University of Oxford and University of Pretoria. He hails from Ghana, and has experience working on children’s rights, litigation, legal research and advocacy. He has been a lawyer for over 10 years.
Following his appointment, Michael said, “I am delighted to be part of IHRDA. Before joining the team, I had been involved in some collaboration with IHRDA, and I look forward to working closely with all staff members, so that together we may push forward the human rights agenda of the organization and make greater impact on the continent.”
On her part, IHRDA Acting Executive Director, Julia Harrington Reddy, said, “Besides distinguishing himself in a competitive recruitment process, Michael is known to us through collaborations with his previous employer. We are happy to have Michael in our team, and we believe his wealth of experience will strengthen our work.”
Michael has published widely on human rights and governance in Africa, including three co-edited books published by Pretoria University Law Press, Springer and Palgrave Macmillan. He equally serves on the Editorial Committee of the African Human Rights Yearbook and edits AfricLaw.com.
Prior to joining IHRDA, Michael was the Manager of the Litigation and Implementation Unit at the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria. The IHRDA family is pleased to have him on board.
