Banjul, 28 August 2024: IHRDA and Women in Liberation and Leadership (WILL) are organising a 2-day training workshop, 28-29 August 2024, with members of the Gambia Police Force and National Agency for Legal Aid on investigating, prosecuting, and supporting victims of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV).
The workshop seeks to equip participants with victim-centered approaches to investigating and prosecuting SGBV crimes, while providing psychosocial support to survivors.
Discussions will touch on overview of SGBV in the Gambian context – causes, misconceptions and consequences; the human rights approach to SGBV; the right-based approach to investigating SGBV cases; SGBV referral pathways; together with ethical standards for engaging and working with SGBV survivors.
“This workshop is essential for empowering law enforcement officers and legal professionals with the skills and knowledge necessary to ensure justice for survivors. By enhancing participants’ capacity, we are promoting accountability, and contributing to a society where such crimes are met with the full force of the law.” – IHRDA Legal Officer, Abdulmalik Bello, observed.
This activity falls within the framework of the IHRDA-WILL project on supporting enforcement of Gambia Truth, Reconciliation and Reparation Commission recommendations on addressing SGBV crimes, funded by Freedom House.
