Banjul, 27 August 2024 – Dr. Gilbert Hagabimana has joined the Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa (IHRDA) as Legal Officer.
Dr. Hagabimana holds a PhD in Law with a specialisation in Public International Law from the University of Bayreuth, Germany, and an LL.M. from the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. He hails from Burundi, and has experience working on children’s rights, freedom of expression, litigation, legal research and advocacy. He is also an attorney, with a wealth of experience litigating cases before the courts in Burundi.
At assumption of duties, Dr. Hagabimana said, “I am delighted to be part of the IHRDA team, and to contribute to the commendable work the organization is doing across Africa to promote human rights and development. I look forward to working with the team of seasoned professionals, so that together we can ensure that our work continues to be meaningful to all Africans.”
Dr. Hagabimana has held positions at the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights and has served as visiting Senior Lecturer at various universities where his research and teaching have concentrated on Public International Law and Human Rights Law. He has also served on the boards of several institutions, contributing to their strategic growth.
Prior to joining IHRDA, Dr. Hagabimana was a Senior Lecturer at the University of Burundi. We are pleased to have him on board, and we believe his extensive and diverse academic and professional experiences render him well-equipped to scale up IHRDA’s work on the African continent.
