Banjul, 1 February 2023: IHRDA is organising a 2-day workshop, 31 January – 1 February 2023, for key Gambian justice sector stakeholders on the application of principles of the African Union Transitional Justice Policy (AUTJP) in subsequent phases of The Gambia’s transitional justice processes.
Participants include representatives of the Ministry of Justice, the National Assembly, Ministry of Interior, national security institutions, other relevant government institutions and the Gambia Bar Association.
The workshop seeks to introduce participants to the AUTJP norms and principles, and concretise ways in which the AUTJP can inspire the formulation of a Gambian National Transitional Justice Policy.
Discussions at the workshop touch on the background, drafting process, context and content of the AUTJP; background and context of Gambia’s National Transitional Justice Strategy – its objectives and implementation mechanisms; intersections between the AUTJP and Gambia’s National Transitional Justice Strategy; developing a Gambian Transitional Justice Policy inspired by the AUTJP; as well as strengthening Gambia’s Transitional Justice processes with the AUTJP.
The workshop comes in a context where the Government of The Gambia is implementing a transitional justice process to address the abuses witnessed many under the previous dictatorial regime, with the justice sector having a pivotal role in this transitional process.
This activity falls within the framework of a project funded by The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation to strengthen transitional justice in Africa.
