The African Child Rights Case Law Database is a collection of judgments from domestic courts in various African countries on cases related to the rights and welfare of children.
The development of this database falls within the framework of a mega project titled ‘The African Children’s Charter Project’ – ACCP, aimed at providing support to the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC) to fulfill its mandate, and promote children’s rights and welfare in AU bodies and mechanisms among others. This project is realized by a consortium of regional and international non-governmental organizations, with the support of the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA). The consortium includes Plan International, Save the Children International, the African Child Policy Forum (ACPF), the Dullah Omar Institute (former Community Law Centre) University of Western Cape and the Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa (IHRDA).
IHRDA was charged with facilitating the development of this database, in collaboration with the Secretariat of the ACERWC.
The database, which serves as a communication tool of the ACERWC, is intended to facilitate access to children’s rights jurisprudence in Africa, and support the work of domestic, regional and international institutions, civil society actors, researchers and students in the area of children’s rights in Africa.
Documents in the database have been organized to allow search by country, subject matter (or keyword), court type and date of judgment. The database provides a summary of each judgment and the full judgment that can be read online or downloaded and accessed offline.
The database has been produced with the technical support of Human Rights Information and Documentation System (HURIDOCS).
