AFRICAN CHARTER ON THE RIGHTS AND WELFARE OF THE CHILD

The African Charter on Rights and Welfare of The Child (ACRWC) was adopted in July 1990 during the 26th Assembly of Heads of State and Governments of the Organization of African Unity (now African Union) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Itentered into force on November 29th  1999.

Article 32 of the ACRWC provides for the establishment of the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC). The ACERWC is the first mechanism to receive a mandate to monitor the implementation process of an international children’s rights instrument.

All States that are signatories to the ACRWC  gain automatic access to the Committee.
